Anal Pap

Special instructions
- Use Dacron swab or brush/spatula combination, rinse the devise in the Preservcyt solution by vigorously swirling. Discard device.
- If delivered after hours, place in refrigerator (N018 - available 24 hours)
Specimen transport requirements
- Cytologic specimens should be labeled with printed barcoded labels (do not put label on tops)
- Placed in a biohazard bag and transported with the printed requisition to the Cytology Laboratory, N018
- Logged in and placed on the top shelf of the refrigerator

Additional information
- Complete the Non-gyn cytology order in Epic to include pertinent history, prior diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, X-ray, clinical findings and results of previous surgeries. Print the requisition and submit with the specimen to Cytopathology – N018. Place on the top shelf of the refrigerator.
- Outreach facilities should use the preprinted “University Outreach Pathology Requisition” and submit with the sample.
- Per ASCP guidelines, testing for high-risk HPV types will only be performed reflexively on cases with current cytologic diagnosis of ASC-US. Requests for high-risk HPV testing are also accepted, but must be requested in the Epic order.
